Types of Hair Loss

Could It Be Alopecia Areata?

7/5/2025

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles, leading to hair Loss. It often presents as sudden, round or oval bald patches. Most commonly on the scalp, but it can also affect the beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, and other areas of the body.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For:

Sudden Bald Spots
You may notice small, smooth patches of hair missing. These can appear quickly, sometimes in just a few days.
Hair Loss That Comes and Goes
Hair might grow back in  one spot while new bald areas show up somewhere else, making it feel unpredictable.
Quick or Widespread Loss
For some, more hair can fall out over a short period, affecting larger areas.

Changes in Nails
Some people experience nail issues like small dents (pitting), ridges, white marks, or nails that feel more fragile than usual.
Itching or Tingling
Before hair starts to fall out, you might feel sensations like itching, mingling, or even a light burning in those areas.
Gray or White Regrowth
When hair begins to grow back, it might come in lighter; often white or gray, before returning to its natural color.
Hair loss in Alopecia Areata varies widely. For some, it remains limited to a few small patches. For others, it can progress to complete loss of scalp hair (Alopecia Totalis) or even hair across the entire body (Alopecia Universalis).
