How to Care for Your Hair & Scalp When You Have Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis Series • Lesson 6 of 7

Reading Time: 8 minutes
Category: Scalp Conditions
Written & Reviewed By: CJ Crain Licensed Cosmetologist | Certified Associate Trichologist | Certified Hair Loss Practitioner

Quick Answer

Living with scalp psoriasis doesn't mean you have to stop enjoying your hair. While medical treatment helps manage the condition, your everyday hair-care routine also plays an important role. Choosing gentle products, avoiding unnecessary irritation, and caring for your scalp consistently can help support healthier-looking hair and greater scalp comfort over time.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this lesson you'll understand:
  • How to shampoo an irritated scalp
  • When it's safe to color or highlight your hair
  • How to brush and heat style your hair more gently
  • When salon services should be postponed
  • How the right home-care products can support your scalp
  • Why consistency matters more than using lots of products

Caring for Your Hair Starts With Caring for Your Scalp

One of the biggest misconceptions about scalp psoriasis is that every visible scale needs to be scrubbed away.
In reality, aggressive scrubbing, scratching, or picking often increases irritation and can make an already sensitive scalp even more uncomfortable.
Instead, think of your routine as working alongside your treatment plan by helping protect and support your scalp every day.
When I'm working with clients who have scalp psoriasis, I encourage them to focus on four simple goals:
  • Cleanse gently
  • Support your scalp's natural moisture barrier
  • Protect the hair from unnecessary breakage
  • Stay consistent with your routine
Small daily habits often make a bigger difference than dramatic changes.

A Five-Step Supportive Home Care Routine

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
What should I actually be doing at home?
While medical treatment is an important part of managing scalp psoriasis, the way you care for your scalp at home also matters. A gentle, consistent routine can help improve comfort, support scalp health, and protect your hair from unnecessary breakage.
No single product can do everything—and that's okay. I encourage clients to think of their home-care routine as a series of simple, consistent steps, with each one serving a different purpose. Together, those daily habits help create a healthier scalp environment and support your overall hair and scalp wellness.

Step 1 – Prepare the Scalp

Scalp Prep
Purpose: Help soften surface buildup so cleansing can be gentler and more comfortable.
One of the simplest ways to make shampooing more comfortable is to prepare the scalp first.
Scalp Prep is designed to help soften surface buildup so cleansing can be gentler and more comfortable. It contains ingredients such as panthenol and glycerin, which are commonly used to support hydration and scalp comfort.
Rather than scratching or picking at scales, gently preparing the scalp first may help loosen surface buildup so it can be released more comfortably during shampooing.

Step 2 – Cleanse the Scalp

Pure Shampoo
Purpose: Remove oil, loose flakes, and buildup without unnecessary irritation.
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and regular, gentle cleansing is one of the simplest ways to support it.
Pure Shampoo is designed to remove excess oil, loose flakes, and styling residue while allowing you to cleanse gently without aggressive scrubbing.
When shampooing:
  • Use your fingertips rather than your fingernails.
  • Massage gently instead of scratching.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Pat your hair dry rather than rubbing vigorously with a towel.
Pure Shampoo is designed to support gentle daily cleansing. If you're also using a medicated shampoo, the two products often complement one another by serving different roles within your overall scalp-care routine.

Step 3 – Condition Both the Hair and the Scalp

Nourish+ Conditioner
Purpose: Support moisture while protecting the hair from breakage.
Many people think conditioner only belongs on the hair—but when the right conditioner is used appropriately, it can also help support scalp comfort.
Nourish+ contains moisturizing and conditioning ingredients such as:
  • glycerin
  • panthenol (Provitamin B5)
  • allantoin
  • silk amino acids
  • copper tripeptide-1.
Together, these ingredients help support hydration, softness, manageability, and overall scalp comfort.
Conditioned hair is easier to detangle, experiences less friction during brushing, and is less likely to break. When your scalp is already irritated, reducing unnecessary pulling and breakage can make everyday hair care much more comfortable.

Step 4 – Daily Scalp Support

Growth Factors Daily
Purpose: Help support hydration and maintain a healthy scalp environment between wash days.
Keeping the scalp comfortable isn't just about shampooing. The way you care for your scalp between wash days can also play an important role in your overall routine.
Growth Factors Daily is a leave-on cosmetic scalp serum formulated with ingredients such as glycerin, panthenol, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, peptides, botanical extracts, and growth factors that help support hydration and overall scalp comfort.
When used on intact, non-irritated skin, a leave-on scalp serum may help maintain moisture and support a healthy scalp environment as part of a consistent home-care routine.
As with every step in your routine, consistency is often more important than using a large number of products.

Step 5 – Support Hair & Scalp Wellness From Within

Total Hair Nutrients
Purpose: Support overall hair and scalp wellness through balanced nutrition.
Healthy hair begins with a healthy body. Your scalp and hair rely on a steady supply of vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients to support normal skin function and healthy hair growth.
While nutrition alone can't prevent or cure psoriasis, eating a balanced diet and correcting nutritional deficiencies when present may help support overall scalp and hair wellness.
Nutritional support may be one piece of a comprehensive hair and scalp wellness plan.
Total Hair Nutrients contains vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts commonly used to support overall hair and scalp wellness, including:
  • Biotin – supports normal keratin production.
  • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) – supports healthy skin and hair.
  • Zinc – plays an important role in normal skin function and immune health.
  • Selenium – supports normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
  • Green Tea Extract – provides antioxidant support.
  • MSM – provides sulfur, an important building block for healthy skin and hair.
No supplement can cure psoriasis or guarantee thicker hair. Instead, I view nutritional support as one part of a broader hair and scalp wellness approach that also includes healthy lifestyle habits, appropriate home care, and medical evaluation when needed.
Because everyone's dietary preferences, allergies, and health history are different, I offer both a marine-based formula and a shellfish-free, vegan-friendly option. During your consultation, we'll discuss your health history, allergies, dietary preferences, and goals to determine which option is the best fit for you.

Professional Scalp Support

A consistent home-care routine is the foundation of long-term scalp wellness. For some people, additional in-studio support may also become part of their overall scalp care plan.
Professional support in my studio may include:
  • Professional scalp imaging and progress photography
  • Ongoing education and home-care guidance
  • Monitoring changes over time
  • Crown Renewal Infusions™, when the scalp is appropriate for cosmetic services
Crown Renewal Infusions™ use a professional-strength Growth Factors+ formula designed specifically for in-studio application. While Growth Factors Daily helps support your scalp between visits, professional infusions provide a higher concentration of growth factors as part of your ongoing scalp wellness routine.
For many people, combining consistent home care with periodic professional support creates a more complete approach to long-term scalp wellness.
Because scalp psoriasis is a medical condition, professional cosmetic services are intended to complement—not replace—the care provided by your dermatologist. If your scalp has significant inflammation, open sores, signs of infection, or other concerning symptoms, I may recommend postponing cosmetic services until your scalp is ready.
Did You Know? Not All Light Therapies Are the Same
Medical UV Phototherapy
  • Uses ultraviolet (UV) light.
  • Prescribed by dermatologists to help manage psoriasis.
  • Examples include narrowband UVB and excimer laser.
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
  • Uses red and near-infrared light.
  • Studied primarily for certain types of hair loss.
  • It is not a treatment for scalp psoriasis.

Gentle Hair Care Matters

Daily habits can make a surprising difference in scalp comfort. When your scalp is already sensitive, gentle techniques can help reduce unnecessary irritation while protecting your hair from breakage.
Shampooing
✓ Use your fingertips to gently massage the scalp.
✓ Avoid aggressive scrubbing or scratching.
✓ Rinse thoroughly to help remove shampoo and loosened buildup.
Brushing
✓ Brush gently and detangle slowly.
✓ Start at the ends and work upward to minimize pulling.
✓ Never use a brush or comb to scrape or remove scalp plaques.
Styling
✓ Choose loose hairstyles that don't place excessive tension on the scalp.
✓ Minimize excessive heat whenever possible, and always use a heat protectant if styling with hot tools.
✓ Avoid hairstyles or accessories that rub against irritated areas during a flare-up.

Can You Color or Highlight Your Hair?

In many cases, yes.
If your scalp is comfortable, well controlled, and free of open sores or significant inflammation, many people are able to continue enjoying professional hair color, highlights, and haircuts.
However, if you're experiencing:
  • Active bleeding
  • Open sores
  • Severe inflammation
  • Significant tenderness
  • Signs of infection

It's usually best to postpone chemical services until your scalp is more comfortable.
Always let your stylist know about your scalp condition before your appointment. Small adjustments in shampooing, sectioning, product application, and processing techniques can often make your visit much more comfortable.
A stylist who understands your scalp concerns can often make simple modifications to help protect your comfort throughout the service.
During an Active Flare-Up
If your scalp is actively inflamed, avoid services such as scalp exfoliation treatments, abrasive scalp scrubs, or vigorous scalp massage. While these services may be appropriate for some people, they can increase irritation and discomfort during a psoriasis flare.

Please Don't Pick the Scales

I understand the temptation.
When plaques become thick or itchy, it can be hard to resist picking or scratching them.
Unfortunately, repeatedly removing scales by force can:
  • Increase irritation
  • Cause bleeding
  • Loosen hairs caught within the plaques
  • Increase the risk of secondary infection if the skin becomes damaged
Whenever possible, allow your prescribed treatment plan and a gentle cleansing routine to do the work instead.

Ingredient Spotlight: Panthenol (Vitamin B5)

If you've looked through my recommended home-care products, you've probably noticed panthenol appears in several of them.
That's because it's a well-known cosmetic ingredient valued for its ability to attract and retain moisture while supporting the skin barrier. In hair care, it also helps improve softness, flexibility, and manageability.
Rather than looking for one "miracle ingredient," I look for thoughtfully formulated products that combine multiple ingredients working together to support scalp comfort, hydration, and healthier-looking hair.

Clinical Pearl

As a trichologist, one of the most valuable conversations I have with clients isn't about finding the "perfect" product—it's about reducing unnecessary irritation.
Small changes in shampooing, brushing, heat styling, and daily hair care habits can make a meaningful difference in scalp comfort while helping protect the hair over time.

Hope for Your Hair & Scalp

Living with scalp psoriasis doesn't mean giving up on healthy, beautiful hair.
Many people successfully manage their symptoms while continuing to enjoy haircuts, color services, and their regular hair care routine—with a few thoughtful adjustments along the way.
The goal isn't perfection. It's learning what works best for your unique scalp so you can enjoy healthier hair with greater comfort and confidence.

From CJ

One thing I always remind clients is that your scalp deserves the same kindness you would show any other part of your body that's healing.
If your skin were sunburned, you wouldn't scrub it with a rough towel or scratch at it all day. Your scalp deserves that same gentle care.
As both a hairstylist and trichologist, I believe you shouldn't have to choose between caring for your hair and caring for your scalp. With a thoughtful routine—and by working alongside your dermatologist when appropriate—many people are able to continue enjoying professional hair services while supporting their scalp's long-term health.

Key Takeaways

✓ Gentle hair care helps support scalp comfort and healthy-looking hair.
✓ Wash with your fingertips—not your fingernails.
✓ Avoid picking or forcefully removing plaques.
✓ Heat styling and hair color may still be appropriate when your scalp is well controlled.
✓ Communicate openly with your hairstylist about your scalp condition.
✓ Small, consistent habits often make the biggest difference over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wash my hair less often if I have psoriasis?

Not necessarily. Your ideal shampoo schedule depends on your scalp, hair type, and treatment plan. Follow your dermatologist's recommendations if you're using medicated shampoos.

Can I still use dry shampoo?

Often, yes. Dry shampoo can be helpful between washes, but heavy buildup may increase irritation for some people. If you notice increased itching or discomfort, reduce how often you use it and continue following a gentle cleansing routine.

Can psoriasis cause hair loss?

It can. Active inflammation, frequent scratching, and forcefully removing plaques may contribute to increased shedding or temporary hair loss. In many cases, hair begins to recover as the scalp becomes healthier and inflammation is better controlled.

Should I tell my hairstylist I have psoriasis?

Absolutely. Knowing about your scalp condition allows your stylist to adjust techniques and help make your appointment as comfortable as possible.

Will my hair ever feel normal again?

For many people, yes. While scalp psoriasis can be frustrating, many individuals successfully manage their symptoms and continue enjoying healthy-looking hair, professional hair services, and a regular hair-care routine. Finding the right combination of medical care, gentle home care, and consistency often makes a meaningful difference over time.
