7/17/2026 Scalp Psoriasis: What Is It?Scalp Psoriasis Series • Lesson 1 of 7Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes Category: Scalp Conditions Written & Reviewed By: CJ Crain Licensed Cosmetologist | Certified Associate Trichologist (USTI) | Certified Hair Loss Practitioner (USTI) Quick AnswerScalp psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin condition that causes skin cells to renew much faster than normal. As a result, skin cells accumulate on the scalp faster than the body can shed them naturally. This creates raised, inflamed patches covered with thick, silvery-white scales called plaques. While it most commonly affects the scalp, psoriasis can also occur on the elbows, knees, lower back, and other areas of the body. Although scalp psoriasis may look similar to dandruff, it is a completely different condition. Understanding the difference is important because each condition has its own underlying cause and responds best to a different approach. What You'll LearnBy the end of this lesson, you'll understand:
Understanding Scalp PsoriasisIf you've ever noticed thick flakes that don't seem to improve with dandruff shampoo, you may have wondered whether something else is going on. For some people, that "stubborn dandruff" is actually scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition. Instead of the immune system protecting the body as it normally should, it becomes overactive and speeds up the skin's normal growth cycle. Normally, skin cells grow, mature, and naturally shed over the course of about a month. With psoriasis, that process can happen in just a few days. Because the body can't shed the excess skin cells quickly enough, they begin stacking on top of one another, forming the thick plaques and scales that are characteristic of psoriasis. On the scalp, these plaques may appear:
In some cases, the plaques extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead or around the ears. Common Signs & SymptomsScalp psoriasis looks different from person to person. Some people have only a few small patches, while others may have widespread involvement across the scalp. Common symptoms include:
In more severe cases, scales can build up into a thick layer that feels almost like a cap covering portions of the scalp. Why Does Psoriasis Happen?Researchers don't know the exact cause of psoriasis, but it appears to develop through a combination of:
Many people experience periods where psoriasis improves and other times when it becomes more active. These are commonly called flare-ups. Common triggers may include:
Every person is different, and not everyone has the same triggers. We'll discuss flare-ups in much more detail later in this series. Is Scalp Psoriasis Contagious?Absolutely not. This is one of the most common misconceptions I hear You cannot "catch" psoriasis from another person. You cannot get it from:
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated condition—not an infection. Can It Affect My Hair?Sometimes. Scalp psoriasis itself does not usually destroy the hair follicle. However, active inflammation, excessive scratching, or forcefully removing thick scales can lead to increased hair shedding while the scalp is inflamed. The good news is that this hair loss is often temporary, and hair often begins to regrow once the inflammation is brought under better control. We'll take a much deeper dive into this topic in Lesson 4. How Is Scalp Psoriasis Diagnosed? Scalp psoriasis is a medical condition that should be diagnosed by a qualified healthcare provider. In many cases, a dermatologist can recognize psoriasis during a physical examination. Occasionally, a skin biopsy may be recommended if the diagnosis isn't completely clear or another condition needs to be ruled out. As a trichologist, my role is to help you better understand what's happening with your hair and scalp. During a Comprehensive Hair & Scalp Consultation, I'll listen to your concerns, review your health history, perform professional scalp imaging, and evaluate the overall condition of your hair and scalp. Together, we'll discuss what I'm seeing, answer your questions, and create a personalized plan that supports your individual hair and scalp wellness goals. If I observe findings that may benefit from additional medical evaluation—or if you haven't yet received a diagnosis—I'll explain what I'm seeing and help guide you toward the most appropriate next step. My goal is to work alongside your healthcare team to support your long-term hair and scalp wellness. Clinical PearlOne clue that often helps distinguish scalp psoriasis from dandruff is where the scaling occurs.
Psoriasis frequently forms well-defined plaques with thicker, silvery-white scales that may extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead or around the ears—a pattern sometimes referred to as the "psoriatic crown. Hope for Your Hair & ScalpHearing that you may have scalp psoriasis can feel overwhelming, especially if you're also noticing increased shedding or changes in your hair. The good news is that many people are able to improve scalp comfort, support healthier-looking hair, and feel more confident by learning about their condition and building a consistent care routine. While psoriasis is a long-term condition that often comes and goes in cycles, learning what triggers your flare-ups and how to care for your scalp can make a meaningful difference. Healthy hair starts with understanding the whole picture. From CJOne of the reasons I became a trichologist is that I understand how frustrating it can be when your hair or scalp doesn’t feel normal—and you’re not sure where to begin. I’ve had clients assume they simply had “bad dandruff” for years, only to realize their scalp needed a more thoughtful approach. Changes in flaking, buildup, comfort, shedding, or hair density can all provide important clues about what may be happening. As a trichologist, I take the time to evaluate the hair and scalp, review the bigger picture, and help you better understand what we're seeing together. I can provide supportive home-care guidance, monitor changes over time, and help you recognize when additional medical evaluation may be beneficial. I believe healthy hair starts with understanding the whole picture. Sometimes that means improving your daily routine, choosing more appropriate products, or supporting the scalp more consistently. Other times, it may include working alongside a dermatologist or another healthcare provider. My goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and more confident about your next step. Key Takeaways✓ Scalp psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes skin cells to build up too quickly. ✓ Symptoms may include thick plaques, flaking, itching, redness, and scalp discomfort. ✓ Scalp psoriasis is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene. ✓ Many scalp conditions can look similar, making a professional evaluation important. ✓ Understanding your scalp is the first step toward making informed decisions about your hair and scalp wellness. Frequently Asked QuestionsIs scalp psoriasis the same as dandruff? No. While they can look similar, scalp psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, while dandruff is commonly associated with increased skin turnover and an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast in susceptible individuals. Can scalp psoriasis permanently damage my hair?In most cases, no. Hair shedding associated with scalp psoriasis is often temporary and hair frequently regrows once inflammation is better controlled. Can I diagnose psoriasis from pictures? Online photos can be helpful for recognizing general patterns, but many scalp conditions look alike. A professional evaluation can help you better understand what you're seeing and determine the most appropriate next step. Can I still color my hair if I have scalp psoriasis?Possibly—but it depends on the condition of your scalp. If your scalp is actively inflamed, irritated, or has open areas, certain salon services may need to be postponed. We'll discuss this in detail later in this series.
